Alice Coltrane & Carlos Santana – Illuminations

Alice Coltrane-Carlos Santana - Illuminations DS514p front

Back the 1970’s it was pretty hard going being a fan of Saantana’s as you never knew what style the next album would in, and this release is a perfect example of that. I’d heard some negative remarks regarding it so never bought it, there was always something i could could rely on coming out to empty my pockets.. And it wasn’t until i started work on this release that i finally got to hear it. (my views on music are no longer anywhere as limited by the way).

And to think i’ve spent all these years missing out on an album that will now get many, many plays.

First off, i agree it’s not what you’d expect from Santana, but that doesn’t make it bad. I think in general we are a little more accepting of artists experimenting nowadays, but whether a record label would have let him get away with some of his swings today is debatable.

If your a hard and fast fan of the harder side of Santana then this may not be for you, but if you liked some of Alice Coltrane’s solo work and reworkings of her late husbands work, especially with the orchestra, then this might just suit you down to the ground.

Anyway, there’s just not enough harp on albums, so this gets a thumbs up just for that.
