Chuck Berry – The London Chuck Berry Sessions

Chuck Berry - The London Chuck Berry Sessions CB066 front

Released in October of 1972 unbelievably this is the only Chuck Berry album certified gold by the RIAA. The song ‘My Ding-A-Ling’ was edited for single release and is the only Berry tune to achieve number one status in both the US and UK. This album is a mixed bag consisting of studio and live material. That is always an uneven listen to my ear.

The running order of songs was altered for the Q8 release placing live songs between studio songs. This CB release has returned the running order to match the vinyl album. I found it very amusing at the end of the show the promoters are attempting to clear the house for the next act.

They refer to them as ‘The Pink Floyd’. I never heard PF referred to with a ‘The’ in front of their name. By the way which one is Pink? Enjoy CB

Grand Funk – Shinin’ On

Grand Funk - Shinin' On CB065 front

Released in 1974 this was the eighth album from Grand Funk. Shinin’ On was their second LP produced by Todd Rundgren and reached the number five position on Billboard’s 200. The cover of Little Eva’s dance song “The Loco-Motion” was released as a single and reached number one. Only nine songs have ever reached number one by two different artist.

The quadraphonic mix was only available on the Q8 cartridge. Capitol altered the running order for the Q8 and that is mirrored for this CB release. The stereoscopic 3D cover is interesting and most used copies now are missing their original red/cyan glasses. You will likewise need to provide your own glasses to properly view the anaglyphic artwork. Enjoy CB.

Al Hirt – The Best Of

The Captain is back!

This title was the 21st LP from Al Hirt originally released on stereo in 1965. I recall ‘Java’ playing on the radio very frequent during my youth. Back then AM radio did not pigeon hole everything into some demographic but rather programed to a very wide spectrum audience. Today everything is in its own box. Not sure that is a good thing.

This Q8 transfer was requested by T Bradley back on February 26th so please pardon the long delay. If you enjoyed this ‘Best of’ may I suggest another title by AL Hirt. “Honey In The Horn” from 1963. It is not quad but enjoyable never the less. Enjoy CB

The Youngbloods – Get Together

The Youngbloods - Get Together CB063 front

The title song from this album has a good bit of history behind it. This song known as both ‘Get Together’ and ‘Let’s Get Together’ was written by Chet Powers who went by the stage name Dino Valenti. Dino was the lead singer for the band Quicksilver and also, during the early sixties, a housemate with David Crosby.

Enter Frank Werber the manager of the Kingston Trio. The Kingston Trio performed this song regularly and released it in 1964 as ‘Let’s Get Together’ on their LP ‘Back In Town’. There was no single. Next the group We Five, also managed by Frank Werber, released ‘Let’s Get Together’ in 1965 as their follow up to ‘You Were On My Mind’. It peaked at #31 on Billboard’s Top 100. Sometime in 1966, to raise money for his legal defense for marijuana possession, Chet sold the rights of the song to Frank Werber. Then in 1967 The Youngboods release their version as ‘Get Together’ which was a minor hit peaking at #62. The song is all but forgotten until it is used as a public service announcement for the National Conference of Christians and Jews. So in 1969 the Youngblood’s version is dusted off and reissued. This time it peaks at #5 and becomes the song most people remember.

The song has been used in several movies and covered by many artist over the years. Jefferson Airplane on their debut album in 1966. The Dave Clark Five, Judy Collins, Stone Ponies, The Carpenters, Louis Armstrong, Ray Stevens and the list goes on. I guess Frank cashed a lot checks and Dino, well, didn’t.

This song captured the young Captains imagination and really spoke to him back during the summer of 1969. A moment in time is frozen near perfection and those very fond memories are recalled every time I hear it. I hope you have some connection too. Enjoy CB

David Gates – First

Released in 1973 this debut from David Gates takes up where Bread left off. The outstanding guitar work is from the hands of the late Larry Knechtel. He was member of The Wrecking Crew and also a member of Bread. Larry performed the soaring guitar solo on ‘Guitar Man’. It’s a shame I missed this LP back during its original release because it’s a good one. Some outstanding tracks here to enjoy are ‘Soap’, ‘Suite: Clouds, Rain’ and ‘Ann’. I wish to thank member Steve Tuznik for bring this album to my attention. Enjoy CB.
