Thanks for the encoded sterreo tracks. My Kenwood KR 6340 biuld in QS decoder decodes the rear channels better, my opinion.

      Thank you for that.

The KR-6340 is equipted with a combined basic RM/SQ decoder with no separation enhancement. As there’s more that just the rear channels that need decoding i’d be interested in an overview of the full decoded aural picture.

      Many thanks

So if it is a combined SQ/RM decoder, wouldn’t that mean it isn’t even decoding the rears correctly? Or does it have separate circuitry for SQ and RM?

The bottom line is just because you like what you hear, doesn’t mean it is a correct decode that sounds as the original artists intended. By artists I am including the producers and mixing engineers.

Indeed. The circuit is very basic and is really neither one or the other, a typical form of ‘decoder’ that was used by Japanese companies of the time not willing to pay any royalties that would allow them to use the official decoder circuitry.

You pin point one problem with quad decoding, without a reference people are unable to know if their decoder set-up is actually correct, which is another reason for this set of final releases.

Well said. Another option is CD-4 or 8-track. But there are also different versions

sacdtodvda and myself found this when doing comparisons of Deep Purple – Machine Head. The Q4 was clearly a different mix though some of the sonic ideas were related. The SACD had left and right swapped over in the rears which didn’t help matters, but a comparison with other formats cleared that up and sacdtodvda put out a version with the rears corrected. It’s a minefield trying to get reliable references.

Thanks so much for this! I’m a sucker for cheesy early Moog albums.
