The Doors – The Singles

The Singles

This new release is a much cheaper option to the now discontinued SACD reissue of The Best Of The Doors by including the Quadraphonic album on Blu-Ray.

Apart from the great value, another point in favour of this release compared to the SACD is the mastering.

The SACD was mastered from the the flat master held in The Doors vault.

The master used for the BD was the original Elektra 4 channel production tape prepared by Bruce Botnick & Paul Rothchild back in 1973.

I would have thought a flat master would be better. What makes the 4 channel production tape an improvement?

Using the production tape means that the the BD replicates the commercial release that people are familiar with directly or through conversions.

There have been comments that the SACD release sounded thin and lacked bass.

I’ve ordered this from Amazon UK, at £15 ish. Finally a sensible price for a quad release.

Owen let me know if you have any issues with the Blu-ray mine shows DTS quad as audio on players menu but receiver only shows front channels active. I’ll check my speaker connections over the weekend.

The disc uses DTS-HD Master, which means it’s Lossless. Not able to check whether it’s backward compatible with decoders unable to decode the HD variant.

For those who like techie bits, it’s 24/192k. A nice touch is the picture of the Quadrafisc cover on the menu screen. All those little touches make an old Quadie feel warm all over…..

I can decode DTS-HD Master Audio 24/192, my Oppo 95 Blu Ray player has no trouble with that to multi channel analogue out. I can also output the core DTS stream over coax and see what my AV amp makes of decoding that. I suspect it will all work fine.

My fault rears were set as surrounds never noticed with all the 5.1 audios and Oxford just killed the center for the Quad decodes so I never noticed. Now I’m good lesson learned surround and surround/rear are very different. Damn newbie’s. How long have I been here and why don’t I pay attention. I can try and blame it on my 29 year old how did my last receiver move.

Heck for that incredibly reasonable price I’ll buy it and sell my SACD and pocket the difference!

That is quite impressive I did the 5.1 box Perception set years ago when the record clubs were getting out of the mail order biz. I paid $15 total. Might get this just to compare the mixes.

As I’ve already said in another post, for the price I paid they are virtually giving away the BD of the quad Best Of with a 2 CD set.

For my money, though, I paid a reasonable price for the BD and got 2 CDs as a bonus.

More quad & surround releases should be available this way – the surround disc on BD with 1 or 2 CDs thrown in at a reasonable price – and not on lossy DVD buried in a huge, very expensive box set with 5 CDs of out-takes and a couple of vinyl LPs.

Here’s hoping Rhino do some more releases in this format – a re-release of Aretha’s quad Greatest would be very nice.

I’ve got it, I think it’s terrific and affordable. Two boxes that don’t check themselves all that often.
