The trouble with Audio Fidelity is it costs an arm and a leg to import them to the UK. I bought one title from them several years ago. They only sold direct no resellers, and their insured postage to the UK doubled the price. To add insult to injury, AF put the total price I paid inc postage on the customs label (it’s supposed to be just the value of the goods in the package) and I ended up paying import duty and VAT on the postage as well as the SACD. It ended up being roughly triple the price it would have been to a US buyer. When I complained to Audio Fidelity that it was their fault for putting the wrong goods value on the customs label and asked for a refund of the excess VAT and duty, AF said they’d done the right thing and they always quote the full billed amount on the customs label. I could not get them to accept that this was wrong and resulting in people paying too much duty.

I’ve remembered what I bought from AF. It was Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here SACD with the Guthrie 5.1 multi channel remix, which made it even worse value at triple the price given the 5.1 mix is pretty poor.

That one actually was from Analogue Productions–and they’re re-releasing it soon. I thought the 5.1 mix was adequate but nothing beats the quad mix! We do seem to see the “usual suspects” over and over–while great quad mixes from Doobies, Eagles, Nilsson, Spinners, Paul Simon (sorry for the U.S. classic rock-centric focus) go unreleased.

Actually I think the quad mix for Wish You Were Here is just as bad as the Guthrie 5.1 remix, they’re both equally poor in different ways. Instead of Pink Floyd doing the quad mix themselves, they should have let Alan Parsons do it since he did a great job on other Floyd quad mixes.

Good to see you posting again OD. 🙂 I wish Audio Fidelity would reissue the Billy Cobham “Spectrum” surround SACD, it went out of print fast! In regards to the comment about Weather Report’s album, Tale Spinnin’, at least Vocalion issued Return To Forever’s Musicmagic quad release. Audio Fidelity issued that one as well, only in stereo.

The two Loggins & Messina titles are wonderful. The Sly & The Family stone is truly the best of both worlds–original mono versions and a revelatory quad mix! I may be wrong but I don’t believe the BOC has a multichannel mix.

    • birdycat19 January 16, 2018 at 20:53 #

Yup, I was wrong! From here on out I’ll only comment on titles I actually own 😉

I have a couple of these. Theydo a fine job. But I will never forgive them for not releasing Weathe Report’s Talespinnin in multichannel. When I asked in an email why in agods no,e they didn’t, I received a reply that said, they couldn’t get the rights.

Sad to say AF appears to have abandoned their quad reissue program. Money and clearance obviously. Sad, because they had a very promising and often glorious run there. Many titles now OOP. Vocalion’s efforts are admirable but I suspect there’s a much bigger demand for quad Steely Dan than for Floyd Cramer and Henry Mancini ;-

Could it not be down to their high prices, very limited distribution and attitude? Dutton appeat to be doing totally the opposite and must be selling enough to make it viable.

Hopefully, the Art Garfunkel releases are the start of them being able to dig deeper into the titles available for release, plus there’s a lot of people who enjoy Henry Mancini etc.

As to Steely Dan, well if the rumours are right they are either lost/destroyed so the chances of getting a release from the masters is going to pretty slim.
