The AOQ EV-4 Shoot-Out Announcement

21 Sep

AOQ has been planning to do some decoder tests of the matrix systems that we all know and love, and has just announced the first of them, which is devoted to EV-4. Personally i’m going to find this of great interest, so here’s the link to the announcement, the shoot out is in a few days time.

I’ve finished listening. For some tracks it was quite easy to pick which of A or B is a more accurate decode, but for about two tracks it was surpisingly difficult as neither A nor B were a particularly good match for the discreet. I’m wondering if they really were the same mix as the discreet in those cases. But then EV-4 was never meant to be an accurate matrix even by it’s originators, and Centaur-II is effectively making the best of a bad job.

Does anyone remember the email address to send results to AoQ? It’s in the audio of one of the podcasts, but I forgot to write it down.

I do hope you guys are keeping up to date with this, the test has now ‘officially’ started.

I’ve burnt the disc, now I just need time to listen to it.

This sounds like fun. Have downloaded the files, burned a DVD and created a Scorecard/Checklist for comparing EV-4 decoding with Centaur and Innvolve SM against the discrete reference files for the six songs. Will ask Mrs. Beyond to join me on this EV-4 adventure. Thanks AoQ for putting this together for our enjoyment.Who else out there is joining in on the fun?

The youtube video halts and restarts every 20 seconds or so on my iPad. And I can’t download files unless I’m at home, it’s a shame they’re not torrents because I can start those remotely.

It’s a shame there are no legacy hardware EV-4 decoders in ths shootout, but I suppose almost no-one has them (except the Captain!) and everyone knows they were very limited. The point may be to compare the methods we have of decoding EV-4 today that people can buy and use.
