Grand Funk – Shinin’ On

Grand Funk - Shinin' On CB065 front

Released in 1974 this was the eighth album from Grand Funk. Shinin’ On was their second LP produced by Todd Rundgren and reached the number five position on Billboard’s 200. The cover of Little Eva’s dance song “The Loco-Motion” was released as a single and reached number one. Only nine songs have ever reached number one by two different artist.

The quadraphonic mix was only available on the Q8 cartridge. Capitol altered the running order for the Q8 and that is mirrored for this CB release. The stereoscopic 3D cover is interesting and most used copies now are missing their original red/cyan glasses. You will likewise need to provide your own glasses to properly view the anaglyphic artwork. Enjoy CB.

Great fun, I enoyed this all the way through. Plenty of quad action from the mix too.

A real blast from my past with this release. Never heard in quad before. An initial listen makes it clear that it is a far sight better than the quad mix for American Band, a truly terrible mix indeed.

Thanks so much for this. I’m just surprised that you wizards were not able to include 3d glasses

The forward thinking quadphile will be able to 3D print their own pair of 3D glasses. I’m not kidding, a friend of mine has 3D printer at home. The only thing I’d have to supply would be the coloured lenses.

Happy to see that everyone who has replied is enjoying the music or at least looking forward to enjoying the sounds presented. Glad you found your glasses zaphod2359. It just wouldn’t be the same without them. I think Amazon can fix those folks up who are in need of 3D specs.

Neat! Haven’t heard this one before. GFR was HUGE from 71-74 here in Los Angeles. “Locomotion” was the last really big hit for them, at least here. Wasn’t WE’RE AN AMERICAN BAND also released in quad?

We were packing for a family trip to Washington DC when I saw the post for this. Wow! what a treat. I can’t wait to get back to my house and give it a listen. Thank you for taking the time to share this. It is very nice of you.

    Best,
    Adam

Actually one of my favorite albums growing up. Not too many Grand Funk fans liked it but I sure did. Thank you for the post.

Wow, the quad mix is only available on Q8…and now we have CB to thank for coming to the rescue. Appreciate you posting this! I wasn’t aware that Rundgren produced this one too, what a talent he is as well.
