The Captains New Ship

25 Aug

captain_beyond

It is with the greatest pleasure that i can announce a new blog dedicated to this wonderful world of Quadraphonic sound. But as i type this there’s also a touch of sadness personally as it’s been quite a journey we’ve had together over these past years. But although it’s a parting of the waves may i wish all of the best, and safe seas, to the Captain and all that join him on his new voyage:

Celebrations & Transitions

The 28th of August will celebrate three years since CB001 debuted on the Dreaming-Spires Quadraphonic Archive-II. Looking further back October 26th will mark four years since the first collaboration between OD and CB. Perhaps some longtime Dreaming Spires members recall that it was DS211 Arlo Guthrie. Where has all the time gone.

OD provides the quad community with real treasures and has done so for many years. He has always been welcoming to the Captain and helpful in every way. His generosity over the years to selfishly post the CB titles to his blog has been a wonderful gift. He has made me feel so comfortable and at home there that sometimes I take my boots off.

However life is about change and we all realize that nothing stays the same. Since day one OD has done all the legwork concerning posted the CB titles and related chores without any compensation requested. He will happily continue but it would be rude of the Captain to always be expecting sometime for nothing. Time brings transitions and it is now time to jump in with both feet and sink or swim.

Therefore the Captain is proud to announce another quad blog. “Captain Beyond’s Quadraphonic Wormhole” was chosen as the name since Blogs are Like Chickens was already taken. This new CB blog will require a lot of time , effort and support from you the quad community to grow into a useful quadraphonic archive. Transitioning the CB releases to their own site is a big change and I do hope it proceeds smoothly. Another change forthcoming is future CB release will be offered via a nominal donation to help offset related expenses.

The Captain wants to extend a welcome to all and invites everyone to stop over and have a look around. There is not much to offer yet but allow it some time to mature. I do hope these transitions are viewed in a positive way and with understanding. The Captain did not get the boot, so don’t think of this as an exit but rather a function of growth. Perhaps just another portal in the wall as if were. Really now can the world have too many quad blogs. CB

This is another previously unlisted quad release. By the time it was released CBS had all but given up on quad, so it was just put out as a normal stereo release.

Michael White – Pneuma

Michael White - Pneuma DS582ch front

Amazing work from violinist Michael White – one of a few that he cut for the Impulse label in the early 70s, all of which helped to completely redefine the use of his instrument in jazz!

Throw away any sleepy connotations you may have about the violin, because in White’s hands it’s an instrument of soul and spirit – one used to unlock cosmic tones that glide effortlessly next to the session’s earthy blend of piano, bass, and percussion! White shapes his sounds beautifully for the session – breaking the violin free of any staid European-bound traditions – and using the instrument as a key part of the new tradition of African American expression explored by Leroy Jenkins, Billy Bang, and others.

Side one features the extended “Pneuma” suite – a long, exploratory track that sounds a bit like some of Leroy Jenkins work at the time – and side two tightens things up with some shorter, groovier numbers that often also feature vocals!

Chuck Berry – The London Chuck Berry Sessions

Chuck Berry - The London Chuck Berry Sessions CB066 front

Released in October of 1972 unbelievably this is the only Chuck Berry album certified gold by the RIAA. The song ‘My Ding-A-Ling’ was edited for single release and is the only Berry tune to achieve number one status in both the US and UK. This album is a mixed bag consisting of studio and live material. That is always an uneven listen to my ear.

The running order of songs was altered for the Q8 release placing live songs between studio songs. This CB release has returned the running order to match the vinyl album. I found it very amusing at the end of the show the promoters are attempting to clear the house for the next act.

They refer to them as ‘The Pink Floyd’. I never heard PF referred to with a ‘The’ in front of their name. By the way which one is Pink? Enjoy CB

Grand Funk – Shinin’ On

Grand Funk - Shinin' On CB065 front

Released in 1974 this was the eighth album from Grand Funk. Shinin’ On was their second LP produced by Todd Rundgren and reached the number five position on Billboard’s 200. The cover of Little Eva’s dance song “The Loco-Motion” was released as a single and reached number one. Only nine songs have ever reached number one by two different artist.

The quadraphonic mix was only available on the Q8 cartridge. Capitol altered the running order for the Q8 and that is mirrored for this CB release. The stereoscopic 3D cover is interesting and most used copies now are missing their original red/cyan glasses. You will likewise need to provide your own glasses to properly view the anaglyphic artwork. Enjoy CB.

Al Hirt – The Best Of

3 Aug

Al Hirt - The Best of Al Hirt CB064 front

The Captain is back!

This title was the 21st LP from Al Hirt originally released on stereo in 1965. I recall ‘Java’ playing on the radio very frequent during my youth. Back then AM radio did not pigeon hole everything into some demographic but rather programed to a very wide spectrum audience. Today everything is in its own box. Not sure that is a good thing.

This Q8 transfer was requested by T Bradley back on February 26th so please pardon the long delay. If you enjoyed this ‘Best of’ may I suggest another title by AL Hirt. “Honey In The Horn” from 1963. It is not quad but enjoyable never the less. Enjoy CB
