Rick Wakeman – Journey To The Centre Of The Earth

5 Apr

On May 6th Universal will be releasing a box set of what is easily Rick Wakeman’s most popular album. What is included is what many fans will be wanting, the original quadraphonic mix that has been sourced from the master tapes (how do i know? i have it here).

But that’s not all, Universal appear to have listened and the transfer sounds like a flat transfer with NO COMPRESSION!!! YES!!!!!

To be doubly sure i checked and it’s completely un-molested.

I plan to do a more detailed review when the set is released.

Related Rick Wakeman News: He is presently re-recording The Myths & Legends . . . King Arthur. No word as of yet if this will be released in multi-channel or not.

This is very good news indeed. Will the quad mix be lossy or lossless?

The disc i was sent contains MLP and DTS streams for the quad mix.

Excellent! And thank you so much for supporting the effort against the loudness war!

So you did contribute to this release after all. It was almost certainly your complaint that made them rethink the compression for the quad release.

The issue now is I have to buy the entire expensive box set, whereas all I really want is the quad on a single DVD-A/V.

Well, as you know i received a blu-ray of what they were considering putting out, which i was actually unable to listen through all the way due to the dreadfull eqing and compression. I complained and…..

One thing i forgot to add. I believe there is going to be a version with an LP of the original album. The test pressing i received was pressed on 180g virgin vinyl.

If you are considering the purchase of the boxset then unless all you want is the quad mix i would consider holding off jumping in and pre-ordering it.

      I daren’t say anymore at this stage…

In my personal view all is not rosy with this release.

I’ve advised them of my concerns but so far i’ve heard nothing from Universal as to whether anything is being done to rectify any of them.
