Crazy and (perhaps over-) ambitious mix. Lead vox are quite often not front centre. At times the placement is a bit smeared on the drums especially. But in track 2, the lead vox are rear left, with different bvox in front centre and rear right, so that’s a lot of discreteness going on, so the decoding is working well. I found the middle few tracks were mainly fronts only, there seemed to be more rear action at the start and end of the album.

What a great album, and an excellent quad mix too. I enjoyed the vocals, the guitars, the drums, everything about this really. The drums opening to the first track is very strong, and uses quad well. Really made me sit up and listen! I didn’t have time to compare with previous decodes, but Phoenix clearly did a great job.

Phoenix is clearly an improvement. I could easily spot the winner in a blind test, but it’s hard to describe. By comparison with Phoenix, the previous release sounds like four mono signals that make up a mix, but with Phoenix it feels like a surround environment. I sounds more like you’re in the room with the instruments.
