Syl Johnson - Back For A Taste Of Your Love CB057 front

This Q8 was provided by ‘lupineassassin’ for the enjoyment of all blog members. This tape was factory sealed upon delivery however there was some binding of the tape on the reel hub. Therefore this CB release comes with a disclaimer. ‘The archival material contained herein does exhibit some audio flaws inherent in the source material.’

My thinking on this is as follows. This is an archive of quadraphonic recordings. Until a more perfect example is made available this is as good as it gets for now. If and when an improved Q8 or Q4 of this title is in hand we can enjoy what we have here. If the flaw is intolerable to your ear well toss the disc out. It is no real loss other than time, bandwidth and a blank disc. After all in life nothing is perfect now is it. Enjoy CB

Given the warning, the flaws were less than I expected. Basically there are some drop outs and other oxide damage in track 1. But otherwise this tape is in good condition and another excellent transfer from the Captain. Track 1 aside, Q8 foibles are largely absent and there is not even much tape hiss.

And I enjoyed the music, nice and funky.

Had no idea this album had seen a quad release, although given the plethora of Al Green albums released that way I’m not surprised. Syl was another wonderful singer in the Hi stable and this is a predictably fun record, gritty, sweaty 70’s soul. Love the bass and horns coming out of the rears. Once again, hats off to lupineassassin and our host for this title! And yeah, f*ck “flaws”–play on!

I’d never heard of Syl Johnson before. So this was an intro into something new again. But it sure didn’t seem like anything new. Just amazing how this sounds like an Al Green album!! His voice, the horns, same percussion style, organ, very very Al Green-like, who happens to be one of my favorites. So it’s kind of like dating a woman that looks just like someone you used to.

This is fun–thanks ‘lupineassassin’ and Captain for the freebie. Not at all concerned about inconsistencies, life is too short to worry about perfection. I agree it’s always better to “love the one you’re with”.

I can’t help but also now think of one of the really great songs written by Pete Ham from the much under-rated band Badfinger. Sharing it here. It relates to the message above from the Captain, and also in a way the attacks in Paris.
