Really enjoyed this. Interesting to hear it after many years. Their first three releases (all double-albums) had the jazzier tracks with the longer improvisations at the end, but this one starts with the more adventurous instrumentals, and works its way towards the more pop material. There’s an oft-repeated story about Hendrix admiring Chicago’s guitarist Terry Kath, which I take with a grain of salt. I don’t think any of his live or studio recordings pose much of a threat to Hendrix, but one of his best solos is on “Women Don’t Want To Love Me”, with a clever horn arrangement that responds to him. Terry’s strength was his versatility, contributing to a solid rhythm section in many different styles throughout the album. Peter Cetera left the band and evaporated as a middle-of-the-road pop singer, but his bass playing on WDWTLM and elsewhere is rock solid and imaginative. I agree with zaphod2359…the first seven albums are the core albums (rather like the seven core albums of the Moody Blues).

Wow OD. You really out did yourself on this one. The discrete separation is amazing. So far I’ve only been able to listen to what is side 1 but so far this is really great.
