John Keating – Space Experience 2

John Keating - Space Experience 2 DS512p front

It must have been hard to follow up to the original Space Experience, but some three years later Space Experience 2 hit the streets, not that most people would have known about it. The original albums sales must have been due to the quad version, but the follow up saw it only being released, or so it seemed at the time.

For some odd reason the quad version was only released in Spain. Thus it has become a little harder to get a copy at a reasonable price.

As with ‘Hits In Hi-F1‘, the three year gap between this and the original saw an improvement in synths and the obvious change in musical direction, plus there was no longer any need to produce a demonstration album so mix wise it’s more controlled. But there are the welcome return of some of the sounds from the original and at the end there’s just the slightest whiff of Oxygene in the air.

Release: DS512p

Source: SQ LP

Process: ‘Phoenix’

Thanks for this. How strange that it’s Spain-only. It’s a more ‘mature’ work than Space Exp. 1 – the music and the mix is a little more restrained. That might have made it a better option in 1975, but less fun for us all these years later. Still worth hearing, but (as OD has already said) easy to be disappointed if you compare to the first LP.

Light, pleasant and airy, but isn’t leaving me with any desire to listen to it again. Following the exuberant riot of Space Experience was always going to be hard, but I’ll likely listen to Oxgene and Equinox again at some point as well as Space Experience but the chances of me getting this release out again are close to zero.

Quad wise this is a much more straightforward mix than Space Experience. There’s nothing wrong with it, but it doesn’t do anything with the medium for me. Quality wise this shows no trace of coming from vinyl, it sounds like a good pressing. The Phoenix decode is good too.

Finally found time to listen to it properly. I liked it more than the previous album (which I also liked a lot). It seems the mix is more adventurous on this release. I particularly liked Stereoskopia and its “dolphin effect” and that cheesy bridge à la Plastic People. As for the decode it’s hard to believe it comes from a matrix encoding. Hats off to OD and his immortal bird. Thanks a lot OD for making me discover this rarity.

OD, I just had a chance to listen to this. Like many here, it is usually some period of time between a download, and a chance to listen. I also go through the extra step of converting the iso into multichannel flacs, so I can play them on my PC based music server with JRiver MC. This is not as exciting as the original, which until you made it available, I had never heard before. I really enjoy these electronic interpretations of well known songs with over the top quad experiences. This one is much less aggressive. Too much original music, which while not bad, I enjoy the very catchy familiar melodies of the covers. Lucy In The Sky was the only one that approached the excitement of the original album. Dreamer was a let down, expected much more from that. But am happy to have it and support your efforts!

I am a little concerned about the lack of comments regarding releases of late, especially this one. I guess your all a little underwhelmed by it. I did try to warn people not to expect the excess’s of the original, it’s always a danger to attempt a follow up to a very successful album.

Having been away excising ghosts, i’ve just put this one while dealing with some blog business and to be honest it’s starting to grow on me. It’s obviously one of those you need to stick with.

Unfortunately this is the last of John Keating’s electronic quad albums, there being one other that will appear on the other blog.

I have been on holiday and will be for a bit yet. I’ll have a backlog of several weeks to get through when I get back home.

Also, it’s the middle of summer. People have barbecues and gardens and other things on their minds.
