The Best of Tommy James & The Shondells

30 Jun

TBOTJATS front 3Link

Here is a fun listen that fits the season too. Ah the summer of ‘69 for me was still a time of innocence even while it was taking it’s dying breath. Enjoyed bubblegum pop music especially if it had the psychedelic tint of crystal blue persuasion. The cars, the girl’s, the bars, the war, sex, drugs, rock n roll and a whole lifetime of experiences lay just around the next corner. Not sure what Tommy and the Shondells were smoking to produce ‘Crimson and Clover’ but pretty sure it wasn’t banana peels. Perhaps it was just crimson and clover. Enjoy CB

Rhoda Scott – Live At The Club Saint-Germain

Rhoda Scott - Live At Club Saint-Germain DS154p front

A hip, double-length set recorded at the Club Saint Germain in Paris on May 16th & 17th 1974 – often with a good deal of funk in the mix! Rhoda’s working here in a slightly expanded version of her usual format – her own Hammond organ in the lead, plus drums from Cees Kranenburg and tenor sax from Leo Johnson – the last of which makes for a wonderful addition to the groove! Most tracks are quite long, and build with a good sense of energy – almost jamming at times, with the drums used much more heavily than on other Scott albums. And Johnson’s sax is great too – bringing in a sharper edge that really deepens the soul, and helps show a side of Rhoda that wasn’t always caught on record at the time.

Quite possibly the ultimate SQ demonstration album. I think even Walter/Wendy would have been more than happy if SQ could have been decoded to this level back in the day.

Again i don’t whole-heartily agree with the allmusic review, i rather enjoy this album and, as a plus point, the mix had a bit of thought put into it, there’s little bits that, if your mind’s elsewhere, you might miss the first time round.

This is EMI Quadraphonic Sound

This Is EMI Quadraphonic Sound DS495p frontLink

This was one of two (the other was classical) SQ demonstration LP’s EMI released to promote quadraphonic sound. As is the norm it contains tracks from the available catalogue of releases along with a track from an album that for some reason was released and discontinued almost immediately. That track is ‘How’d you like to spoon with me’ from the Original London Cast recording from ‘Showboat’  (see picture below).

This release contains two disc’s, the first is the normal decoded version with the the second containing a lossless stream of the original un-decoded stereo file used for decoding. This can be played on both standard DVD and DVD-A players so that comparisons can be made using any decoders you may have.

Help needed on a B.B.King LP

10 Jun

One of the problems i run into while tracking down releases i don’t already own is whether a particular that has been believed to be quad for years actually is. There were many on Mark Anderson’s list that were down as being QS releases that weren’t, the soundtrack to Tommy, the Climax Blues albums and many others.

Now i have a question i’m hoping one of you might be able to help me with. It concerns the B.B.King album ‘In London’. Nowhere can i find any prof that it was released in quad apart from Marks’s list, the American LP cover i’ve seen doesn’t mention anything, and a test decode gives nothing nice.

So, if you own the album could you look to see if your copy mentions it?

Thanks

OD
