The Byrds – Byrdmaniax

The Byrds - Byrdmaniax DS487p front

Although Allmusic doesn’t give it a great review, i  like it. It should be noted that if you know the stereo mix then you’ll find say the quad mix is quite different. It didn’t do too well in the charts in the USA, so that’s possibly why the quad version was only released in Japan.

Release: DS487p

Source: SQ LP

Process: ‘Phoenix’

Wow! Amazing mix … I just received my Japanese Quadraphonic copy after finally shelling out for one on eBay. I am a Byrds freak (and have been collecting their vinyl for a good 20 years). It’s like hearing a whole new album and, what’s more, a damn good one contrary to all reviews (just Clarence White’s curling licks in the intro of Glory Glory – as compared to the piano and drum ‘thump’ of the stereo version was worth the price!!). I’m loving life right now … Jamaica is playing out and the sound is supreme!

Of course it’s a Byrds-on-the-downhill-slope album, loaded with covers and only McGuinn left from the original band. Producer Melcher added a lot of intrusive horns and other elements against the band’s wishes to make it more “commercial.” BUT it has one of the all-time greatest quad mixes ever! A must-hear! I have the CD-4 conversion mentioned above but am looking forward to hearing the new one.

I have an existing conversion of this, looks like a possibly Romanotrax Q4 or Q8. It’s hard to tell because I’m away from home and just looking at the files on my torrent webui. It’ll be interesting to hear how Phoenix does in comparison.

My guess is that this will be a Q4 from the “Mike Robin” aka “Columbia Underground” tapes – in which case it could be a completely different quad mix from the official release.

It will be interesting to hear your opinion of the comparison.

I’m not in a position to check for a while.

If your copy is from the same conversion as my copy, I’d have to say it’s definitely discrete and must be from a Q4. The audio quality is too good to be Q8. As for the music and as more a fan of The Byrds earliest stuff, “downhill-slope” is a good description.

Right, I’ve checked the data I have on my existing release of this. It says it’s from Army Of Quad, transferred from Q4, and the graphics say Columbia on them. There’s nothing about Mike Robin or Columbia Underground, but if that’s the only Q4 that was issued then that’s what it must be. Unless anyone knows of another Q4 release of this?

Fantastic – a great mix of a great album. Big Byrds fan here. Looking forward to hearing a Phoenix decode of this one!

    Thanks OD.

I think it was Army of Quad, a Q4. Still very keen to hear this Phoenix decode!

Would be interesting to hear of comparisons between the two. Obviously it’s impossible to match exactly a Q4 with an SQ decode, but would be nice to know how close it may be.

I believe the Q4 was from one of the Columbia ‘unreleased mixes’ reels, rather than a factory produced reel. It does sound good, but I’m not sure of lineage of the Q4 source before it was transferred… Which makes your decode all the more interesting.
