I was surprised how much I enjoyed this, since I’m not normally a lover of Jazz. But this is very mild Jazz if you see what I mean. The LP isn’t the cleanest, despite OD’s cleanups (which usually result in near perfection) there is some surface noise at the start and end of tracks (the quiet bits) and there are a couple of clicks left in as well. I assume fixing them would have done more damage to the audio than leaving them in, it’s always a trade off.

The quad mix is indeed surprising for a trio as others have said. The bass line (it sounds like a double bass to me) comes out of all speakers, dry in the fronts (no reverb) and with reverb that’s a bit boomy in the rears. I’m not sure why they thought that was a good idea, it just means the bass comes from everywhere at once. The rest of the mix is more conventional with instruments in various speakers, not overly active but enough for some interest.

Because it’s a trio I thought that it would be three directions, one of the piano, one of the double bass and one of percussions. I was surprised that the various drums had various directions between left and right front.

Not wishing to sound like a Mickey D ad, but I’m lovin’ this! Much appreciated!
