Babe Ruth – Babe Ruth

Babe Ruth - Babe Ruth CB034 front

This is Babe Ruth’s 4th LP and was only offer in quad format on a Capitol Q8 cartridge. In 1975 the Captain must have been living under a barnacle at the time as this band slipped under his radar. I found this a very enjoyable listen with good use of surround mixing techniques. Stadium anthem material ‘Somebody’s Nobody’ as well as smooth FM tunes ‘We People Who Are Darker Than Blue’ are offered here. ‘Jack O’ Lantern’ how come I never heard that song on the radio… demographics? Then right into ‘Private Number’ that should be another stadium anthem or top 40 hit. Followed by my favorite cut ‘Turquoise’. This rare tape was donated toward the cause by member ‘rockyofpittsburgh’. Enjoy! CB

Great stuff, I really enjoyed this. Some rockier numbers, some smoother pop numbers, a nice balance of the two. The quad mix is good and used effectively to suit the music, a nice active mix. The Q8 transfer is very good, the only obvious issue is tape hiss which varies in how much there is throughout the tape. But the hiss never spoils the music and is only reall obvious between tracks. Fidelity is excellent for a Q8, I had no impression of restricted high end frequencies. If there is any wow and flutter I didn’t notice it.

Great work Captain, I only wish I’d listened to it sooner.

Thanks OD. Yet another gem from the 70’s. I bought this album in 1975 because of the hit single “Private Number” Even though that song was not typical for the rest of the album I found the album very good. I had forgotten that the album was released in quad Q8. IT was such a lovely surprise to find it here after all these years. Thanks again OD.

An excellent album, but you will find it is actually the band’s 3rd. Of the two releases in 1975 this was released in January and Slidin’ Home was October.
