Ray Charles – Genius Live In Concert

13 Dec

Originally released in the 1960’s the album was re-released in quad in the 1970’s.

This new decode has shown that instead of being re-mixed the album is an up-mix from the original master. But don’t let that put you off, it’s an interesting and enjoyable concert.

Reissue: New source & decode

Release: DS97s

Source: QS LP

Process: QS/Sphinx

Format: DVD-A/V   MLP/DTS/DD

I have finally gotten around to putting a close ear on this title and I have to report that this is probably more of a curiosity than anything. I am now listening to a redbook CD of the same concert, and the experience in stereo is superior to the quad. Ray’s vocals are less prominent on the quad, and there is a great deal of what I will call “phasing artifacts” in the front channels of the quad.

I an guessing (although I do not know) that the original recording from 1964 was two track at best, thereby forcing any quad to be an upmix, as noted previously. I have heard several very good upmixes in my day, but this one is less successful to my ears.

This is no criticism of the decode itself. Instead I am grateful to OD for giving me the opportunity to hear the LP decoded as well as possible to allow for a good evaluation of the mix.

In summary, the music is great and worthy of your attention, but the upmix is not great.

One day i will interrogate this album deeply, i believe it could be improved upon decode wise.

The Sphinx decode sounds a bit cleaner and better seperated than QS/IIa releases. That said, it’s a bit difficult to be certain from an upmix source and something I’ve never heard in quad before.

Musically this is good stuff, Ray Charles isn’t my core musical tastes but is plenty enjoyable. The people at the concert that night clearly had a good time, it’s a great concert atmosphere.
