Blimey, this does sound good! I had the Q8 for a while, but have only just got round to listening to the new Phoenix decode. So clear! I think this era of Barbra Streisand is unfairly overlooked. I’m biased I have to say as she was keen on Laura Nyro at the time (two of her compositions on this, including the title track) and the arrangements are very similar to Nyro’s own. Streisand’s voice is purer I have to admit, but this is probably as close to ‘new’ quad releases by Ms. Nyro as I’m going to get.

The strings on this, by the way, come through so well. No mushiness in the decode, but then I shouldn’t expect anything less!

Just listen to the last track, such a simple and yet effective quad mix. The piano is solidly rear right, and appears absolutely nowhere else (fantastic for matrix). Bass guitar is spread across the fronts and is deep and creamy, and then Streisand’s voice on top of this. All through this album the mixes are simple yet effective, a trombone here, a piano there, and always clearly placed with no matrix blurriness. AndI even like the music, which isn’t a given with Streisand. Great stuff OD.

Amazing soundfield from a matrix source. This is what the decoders should have done already in the 70’s. Quad might have survived then? Thanks OD, you have done it again!

I agree with Romanotrax on this one…so very close to the Tape source and without the wow and flutter…..Great Job!!!

So i just did a few comparisons between this SQ version and the Q8. This SQ version, I believe, is as close as you are going to come to the Q8 without having a Q8 tape. Especially the rear channels on the title track are near identical. Truly an amazing result from a matrix source.

WOW, many thanks for taking the time to do the comparison. It’s good to know i’ve been going in the right direction 🙂
