BBC 5.0 Surround Broadcast On Sunday

19 Sep

On Sunday 21st at 15:00 UK time, there will be an 5.0 surround broadcast of a new play using MPEG-DASH via the internet. This is the same system as recently used on the quadraphonic Proms broadcasts.

More info HERE

Hopefully someone can record this  😉

I tried but without success.. had to do it automatic because i was away, pity..

If they use the same bitrate as te sample, it is not very much..

The bit rate in MPEG DASH is dynamic, it is supposed to scale to the available broadband bandwidth. Which is precisely what you don’t want when trying to record it. I hate all this emphasis on instant live streaming that we have on the net today. I’d far rather let the full bit rate version trickle in overnight (as would most on the blog here I suspect), but apparently we’re not normal and most people today don’t want to wait.

eehh this topic was opened (i guess by OD) to ask about recording this..

I was explaining why beukenoot might have found the bit rate “not very much” to use his words when he recorded the sample.

To get a good recording you need very high broadband speeds so that MPEG DASH dynamically gives you the highest bit rate stream.

I guess it’s the usual drill here. Rights issues etc together with MPEG-DASH being (I presume) an in-browser technology (or at least that’s how it’s being deployed here).

Wow talk about straight in. No test streaming at all before hand. Stream started with the first words of the play bang on three o’clock. Mercifully had started recording prior to the stream kicking in. Anyone else having any success?

    Duration : 0:00.043 (2 048 samples)
    Sample rate : 48000 Hz
Channels : 5: FL FR FC BL BR
    Bitrate : 138 kbps
    Codec : AAC
    Codec profile : AAC LC
    Encoding : lossy
    Tool : Lavf52.64.2

This is what they broadcast now. (one header i guess). The test stream does not work. I hope that it will not be restricted to UK…

Sunday I am not at home. But i can ty to put it on schedule in IDM 😉

    I’ll give it a go, too. 😉

The tes file on the BBC site plays out fine with all channels as they should be. Have tried Sony ACID Pro 7 and Soundforge but can’t record. Looking through web for info it may not be easy…. I see they’ll have an audio file after broadcast which I may be able to pilfer later.

Unfortunately the surround version will not be available as a download

    I’ll have a go at recording it….
