Original Broadway Cast – Hair

CB027 Hair - OBCR CB027 front

The original Broadway cast recording of ‘Hair’ received a Grammy Award in 1968 for Best Score from an Original Cast Show Album. It sold nearly 3 million copies in the U.S. alone by the end of 1969. The orange-and-green cover art is immediately recognizable. Original quadraphonic releases came in three flavors. Q4 reel, CD-4 record and Q8 tape which this transfer was sourced from. Sealed tape graciously provided by rockyofpittsburgh. Enjoy CB

I was pleasantly surprised how good this sounds, much clearer than previous Q8 transfers of Hair that I’ve heard. A nice discrete mix of a classic album.

Hmmm, my copy has pretty minimal fidelity. Not to look a gift horse but…

Thanks for this Hair and West Side Story are probably the only 2 Broadway Musicals I ever saw and love too this day..The music of both take me back to my youth.

This is great. The lyrics are hilarious, and music is excellent, all round fun. The quad mix is active and good with it, contributes nicely to the experience. The Q8 is about as good as they come, there’s no tape hiss at all that I can hear, freqeuncy response doesn’t seem restricted, and I haven’t noticed any other issues. That sealed Q8 really was worth unsealing to do this transfer, good work Captain.

Do listen to the lyrics, I’m currently in hysterics.

Excellent transfer. Sounds good. Not many recordings from that time were recorded on so many tracks that allowed them to be released in quad. I know there are a few but not that many. Thanks again OD.

I saw Hair. Senior class trip to NYC, May, 1971. Good to hear this and reminisce. Excellent transfer. Sounds terrific! Thanks so much!

Groovy! My older brother had this when it came out. I’m looking forward to hearing it in quad. Thanks

There is a very long article for the show on Wikipedia. It was revolutionary in its day and had problems getting produced in many cities. In London, it required an act of Parliament to get staged. I remember hearing many of the songs performed by other artists on the radio in the United States: Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In by The Fifth Dimension, Hair by The Cowsills, Good Morning Starshine by Oliver, and Easy To Be Hard by Three Dog Night. There were many others.
