What benefit do we get listening to these UHJ broadcasts in stereo? Are they meant to sound better than normal stereo would? Or is there only a benefit if the UHJ is decoded?

Good question. I have wondered whether it’s posting about UHJ broadcasts, but i guess there’s always the chance that someone still has one of the cheap decoders that were produced. or has the software plug-ins that do a reasonable job of decoding.

I saw it as a way of extending the blogs coverage of what is happening out there. If people find it pointless then i’ll stop posting news of broadcasts.

Obviously i’m recording them and will release them in decoded format at some point.

As to whether they sound better than a standard stereo broadcast, i can only comment on my personal findings. In stereo there is more ‘life’ than you’d normally get, and surrounding noises, especially on location recording, seem to be well integrated, making it a pleasurable listening experience.

These were recorded in 2007. Is the BBC still recording in UHJ?

Even 2007 is interesting for quadraphonic recording. With the BBC’s growing experience, their quadraphonic recording technique is probably improving. It would be nice to sample some of these sound-fields as excerpts that you think show how this medium has developed.

They were not recorded in 2007, any dates that are on the BBC 4 Extra site are only relevant when it comes to being broadcast on BBC Radio 7/4 Extra

I’m not saying these postings aren’t worthwhile, far from it. I’m just interested to know what benefit we might get in stereo. I seem to recall some albums recorded in UHJ just to get a better stereo presentation.

Yes, UHJ has been used a number of times on things like backing vocals, etc
