Heaven & Earth – Refuge

24 Mar

Pat Gefell and Jo.D Andrews were the New York based folk-pop duo ‘Heaven & Earth’, who only recorded one album for Ovation in 1973, before consigning themselves to being an almost forgotten footnote in the history of music.

Mix wise, it’s another non-discrete (dare i say ‘modern’) mix that adds to the feel of the music rather than the ‘four-to-the wall’ type that would certainly be a distraction. There is the odd touch of distortion on a couple of tracks.

Very nice. The two female voices blend very well when they are singing together. I’m not sure I’d describe this music as psychedelic as marconiex does, it’s more middle of the road pop/folk and a very good example too. It is a shame this is the duo’s only release.

As for the quad, I disagree with OD’s comments on that. I find this moderately discrete though subtle with it, there are several occasions when the female voices are singing from different positions eg. I recall one in front right and the other mid left in one track. To be fair to OD he almost certainly made his comment based on a QS-Final decode which had much less seperation (to me it put nearly everything in the middle of the room).

Yes, your correct, it was my view of the mix based on the QS-Final decode. I should have removed that comment.

If people like the music, they should check out the elaborate CD reissue, which includes two booklets, a detailed history, and LOTS of photos.

I just found this at Amoeba Hollywood a few weeks ago. Very interesting, pleasant album. Talented ladies…looks like they didn’t like the road, or the business, or both and hung it up pretty much.

A female psychedelic duo's sole album released in 1973. Very well polished folk, pop and psychedelic sound with Anita Kerr Singers harmonies.
