Heaven & Earth – Refuge

24 Mar

Pat Gefell and Jo.D Andrews were the New York based folk-pop duo ‘Heaven & Earth’, who only recorded one album for Ovation in 1973, before consigning themselves to being an almost forgotten footnote in the history of music.

Mix wise, it’s another non-discrete (dare i say ‘modern’) mix that adds to the feel of the music rather than the ‘four-to-the wall’ type that would certainly be a distraction. There is the odd touch of distortion on a couple of tracks.

Paul Horn & The Concert Ensemble

10 Mar

Paul Horn & The Concert Ensemble DS360f sm

Originally released in stereo, then as part of Ovations initial foray into Quadraphonic releases using EV-4, followed by its re-release in QS when Ovation adopted the system. It could possibly be the only re-issue of a previous EV-4 album by Ovation as there appears to be no proof (so far) of any other having been re-issued.

I suspect the QS release is quite rare as it has been quite a torrid search to get this copy (which by the way, was still sealed), primarily because the sellers more than often didn’t have a clue what they were selling. All of the others i’ve come across were either the ‘very’ common EV-4 version, or the not quite so common original stereo release.

The Grass Roots – Their 16 Greatest Hits

6 Mar

The Grass Roots - Their 16 Greatest Hits CB015 frontLink

The Grass Roots were created to fulfill a need for a working band after a hit record had been produced in the studio. They were the record company’s idea of what a southern California folk rock band should sound like. The Grass Roots had many big hits on AM radio with ‘Temptation Eyes’ being burned into memory. The Captain particular enjoyed track 4 ‘Let’s Live For Today’ and track 15 ‘Feelings’. This is the 2nd release in a collaborative effort between OD & CB with the Command Quadraphonic label. I really like the Command label series and hope you do too. Enjoy   CB

Roy Clark – The Best Of

4 Mar

Roy Clark - The Best of Roy Clark CB014 frontLink

Roy Clark is one the best pickers from our generation and deserves more credit as a virtuoso than he gets. This title was only released as quadraphonic on the Q8 format. The Captain had more than a few issues with this cartridge including steaming and ironing out the 40 year old wrinkles. You will notice some imperfection and I hope they are acceptable until a better copy comes along. Enjoy   CB
