FOREIGNER is the only Cat quad title I’ve heard that remotely sounds like it was mixed by someone who understood what four channel sound was 😦

Not just the Cat Stevens quadraphonic releases have this lack of effect. From my experience the A&M quad catalog suffers from this weak quad mix syndrome. Similar results have appeared on ‘Catch Bull at Four’ and ‘Teaser and The Fire Cat’ as well as ‘Whipped Cream’ and ‘Best of Herb Alpert & TJB’. I’m sure there are other A&M titles as well. Interestingly ‘Journey to the Center of The Earth’ is not a week mix but rather robust. Of course being recorded live in Ronnie Lane’s remote Airstream Mobile Studio on 16 track equipment having a major impact I suppose. It’s all in the mix. Agree with sacdtodvda that having Cat in four corners is good never the less.

The reason why the Rick Wakeman mixes are better is because he was involved in the re-mixing himself. I have this on good authority.

The start of track 4 is reminiscent of an Ozric Tentacles track, the one with all the water bubbles noises.

I agree there’s a nice quad soundfield. I like some tracks more than others but overall some good music here. This sounds quite a bit more recent than the 1970s, if I was played this blind and asked to guess I might have ventured 1980s or later. Great piano playing throughout.

The Cat Stevens quads (apart from Foreigner) have a reputation for having not very adventurous mixes. However, the sound field here is still very nicely opened up – and there is not much wrong with having Cat in all four corners of the room!
