This is fantastic. Great music surrounding me, lots of use of quad. And Joplin’s voice is superb, track 8 which is just her singing solo for much of the track really shows this. There’s surface noise audible between the tracks which intrudes a little on track 8 so probably not a pristine LP and/or pressing, but apart from that the sound and transfer quality are great. Well don OD and thanks, this is the best thing I’ve listened to all week.

Yes i’m afraid my copy has always been like thgat from day one. Removing the noise would have impacted to much on the music so reduced it just a touch, which didn’t have any impact otherwise. I felt it was the right option.

I have both versions and yours sounds GREAT, O.D. (No surprise there, really.) The reel-to-reel transfer suffered from muddy vocals and was too discrete (the Jop was stuck up in the left front corner for the whole album).

Muddy vocals would be a problem. But if the Q4 discrete mix has them front left then that’s how it is meant to be, and an accurate transfer should place them there.

It’s possible that the SQ LP used a different discrete mix even before being matrix encoded.

It’s more than possible it’s a different, or earlier rejected, mix as the front channels are not part of the encoding in SQ, unlike all of the other matrix systems. That would mean that if the SQ LP had used the other mix, the vocals would have been exactly the same.

I have a conversion of the Quad reel…have you compared? Same mix I assume. Guessing this one’s gonna sound better 😉

It’s hard to beat a transfer of a Q4, and no, i’ve not compared them
