It took me about an hour and a half to get this. Well worth the wait and I must say I found it a surprise that an album like this was free. It’s nice to see something “free” other than dinner / classical music.

Well I could have lived without ever hearing this. Muscially I can find nothing of merit here, such a shame that Lennon stooped to such lows and Nilsson trashed his voice for it. Many of the tracks are just noise to me and the screaming matches others mention are even worse.

Transfer wise, the Captain has done a good job on a Q8 that’s clearly in trouble. There’s tape wow and flutter in several tracks, including the first minute of the album so probably at the start of the tape. High frequency response is a bit more restricted as well but it’s the tape since the Captain’s other transfers are better. That’s the breaks doing Q8 transfers, the media format is compromised and will never sound as good as LP apart from being genuinely discrete.

I’m looking forward to this I bought the LP when it 1st came out. It’s most famous for being the LP Nilsson destroyed his voice on – he and Lennon having screaming matches etc. On this LP you can hear the beginnings of the damage. His subsequent LPs lacked the voice and as a consequence his song writing declines as he despaired.
    Thanks for posting this CB.

I have this as a DTS CD from ages ago that I am glad to be able to finally replace. Can’t believe there are still unsealed Q8s floating around. That record is as old as I am.

Anyone else finding the sonics on this one disappointing? Truly muddy vocals considering how clean and expansive the John Denver one is, both from Q8. Anyone heard the CD release of this and can comment how it sounds in stereo?

Yeah, it’s definitely dullsville, especially compared to the old DTS version I have (along with Harry’s three other Quad releases…are those next!?) The latest Anesini stereo master on the Nilsson box set that came out a few months ago is stunning.

Sorry guys just getting around to answering your posts. I have no idea the source of my DTS version. I wasn’t comparing quad mixes to a CD, just pushing last year’s incredible Harry RCA box to anyone who cares 🙂

What was the source for your DTS version? Was that a commercial release (in which case it didn’t go through Q8) or someone else’s conversion? And if a conversion was that Q4 or Q8 or something else? Your statement would be a lot more meaningful with this sort of context. Q8 is an imperfect format.

I agrre, and comparing anything to a remastered stereo CD is also somewhat pointless. The quality of Q8’s varied considerably, some very good and some barely useable

    Another big surprise!

    And from an sealed Q8!

    Yeah! Thank you so much!

Thank you thank you! Creepy, I just managed to put my hands on Nilsson Schmilsson, and was looking around for this one last night. Can’t wait to hear Many Rivers to Cross…

Do have a link for Nilsson Schmilsson?

I am climbing the walls with excitement as I wait for this to download. As it’s the freshest vibe, I’m surprised the d/l speed is so slow or zero. Anyone else having issues?

    • Owen Smith December 10, 2013 at 09:17 #

This release downloaded very quickly for me, only took a couple of hours. Most releases take the best part of a day. The Captain Beyond releases do seem to be faster, probably due to his upload speed vs. ODs.

      • oxforddickie December 10, 2013 at 09:21 #

Yes, i’m envious of his upload speed

He’s in the US, where average broadband speeds are much higher than in the UK.
