Captain Beyond Releases

23 Aug

Many of you know of ‘Captain Beyond’ as both the source of some Q4 releases and as the middle man in the recent few Q8 releases. He has now, bravely, decided to start releasing his own series of Q8 & Q4 quadraphonic transfers freely here. He has a collection containing some rare gems, many of which probably haven’t been seen or heard since the 70’s.

The first release will be as soon as possible, please help him by continuing to seed his releases.

Thanks for both of you for keeping these fun original mixes alive! I seed everything I download indefinitely. I figure that it’s the least I can do.

Q8 tapes are know to have much flutter. Did he or others used a way to go around this? (f.ex taking the tape out and reading it with an adapted R2R device?

I am of course very interested. I have been on the background this month due to illness.

Hope you are feeling better now beukenoot and please excuse my delayed reply. The method you suggest (spooling onto R2R) seems interesting to say the least but surely would encounter equalization & bias problems. Without getting too technical I will discuss some equipment and software I use to achieve the end results you hear offered on OD’s blog from the Captain. The Q8 is 1st repaired (pad & splice) and then played via a vintage Akai CR-80D-SS Quad 8-Track recorder deck. The output from the CR-80D is then fed into an Akai EIE Pro USB audio interface for capture. The output from the Akai EIE is then captured via an Acer laptop into Adobe Audition CSS.5. Continuing the process… no less than 7 other programs are utilized to produce the DVD-A containing the MLP, DTS & Dolby Digital files. I use no equalization or noise reduction what so ever preferring the original vintage sound (warts & all). It is an adventure which I enjoy and hope that others will benefit from the Captain’s output as well.

Any chance that Nilsson Schmilsson is in the pipeline? Been wanting to hear that one for a long time.

OD what a grand introduction and buildup you have given. I do hope the Captain is able to fulfill any expectations you and your members may have. I am very much looking forward to sharing what I can from the past. Wish to thank all you good bloggers for the kind words. The main thing to remember here is to have fun and enjoy the music.

Almost had a heart attack here! At first I thought this was a reference to quad releases of the great albums by the 70’s band “Captain Beyond”!! Now THAT would be an incredible find!!!
