Carole King – Tapestry

Carole King - Tapestry DS272 front

Q8 supplied by ‘Lupine Assassin’ and transfered by ‘Captain Beyond’.

This tape was originally mastered with all of the channels in the wrong place, but correcting the issue brought to life a more major issue, that being the quad mix of this album released by ODE is fake.

After the superb mix on Carole’s ‘Music‘ album, all they appear to have done for this release is to use the stereo mix on the front channels and the mix with additional reverb placed on the rears.

Release: DS272

Well this album is legendary and I’ve never heard it before. Carole King wrote one of my all time favourite songs (Up On The Roof, Laura Nyro’s version), not to mention ‘Goin Back’ as performed by The Byrds. The story behind the ‘fake’ quad mix is interesting – the mix does occasionally emphasise the rears but the song writing and the arrangements do shine through. I do like this Brill Building sound. Reminds me a lot of Nyro’s stuff, unsurprisingly. Thanks for finally acquainting me with this album.

i just watched an interesting documentary about Carole King on BBC4. If you’re in the UK it should be on iPlayer.

Well the fake quad is a waste of time but the music and singing is lovely as per the previous Carol King release on here.

That’s funny. You mean I could move my stereo speakers into the loo and get the same effect? I wonder if the multi-channel SACD released in 1999 is the same.
