The opening track has a crash cymbal panning around all four speakers, if I’m not mistaken. Hearing “Evil Ways” in it’s full form from the multitracks is alone worth the price of admission

Oh my goodness – this one is a stunner to me. All the way through. Just love the spread – and the music still maintains a grounded center, if you see what I mean. Great overall coherent presence – AND lots of cool action all around. What a brilliant album anyhow, and how appealing it all sounds in quad. Some things sounded different to me – but only in a good way. I’m putting this one again, right now!

jpfunk: Your review is spot on! “You Just Don’t Care” is also my favorite song. It sounds like the drums were set up in the next room at times. I think the guitar solo is the same take…I have to listen to it again.

Great fun, I enjoyed this immensely. Some cool bongo work going on in the rears for some tracks. A good antidote to the pouring rain outside.

I found a fresh breath of life in this old gem. Some tracks stand up better than others, but all around bang on. Now I’m playing this and the Steely Dan “Countdown…” to death! Thank you, as always!

I have had the the stereo mix burned into me head for 40+ years so this one sound drastically different than the stereo LP.

    Detailed song by song review…

Waiting – WOW really great channel separation and there are definitely guitar parts not in the stereo mix. Perhaps parts are from alt take or just mixed really differently. Congas are prominent in the the left rear. Really cool.

Evil Ways – Sick of this song but anyway… cool mix. organ in left rear. and this is the prob the same hard ending with no fade just like the Greatest Hits version so it is longer by a few seconds.

Shades Of Time – nice channel separation and you can hear guitar and tambourine part better than stereo mix

Savor – awesome mix. I love the crash cymbal in the right rear. and at the the end it pans right rear/left rear. really fucking cool. it also fades out more than it segues into Jingo like it does on the stereo version

Jingo – cool mix. organ left rear. guitar in front. cymbal crashes in right rear. percussion in right rear

Persuasion – definitely different vocal than stereo LP. very cool hand claps in right rear after verses that really high in the mix. this might be a totally diff take than the stereo LP

Treat – nice mix with percussion parts in right rear. end part after solo sounds like it might be from diff take than stereo.

You Just Don’t Care – this one is the one i am disappointed with. it is my favorite song on the album. the drums are buried in this mix. especially during the verses the snare drum is and hi-hat are buried. BAD!! on the stereo version the snare pops. the cool thing is that the guitar solo section and some other parts sound like they are from another take.

Soul Sacrifice – weird mix with lots of echo. drum solo section is definitely from another take and other might be as well

Funny, Santana never really interested me, but when I hear his albums i know many numbers.

Ah but are any of your 78s quad encoded OD? 🙂 Despite being mono, I’m sure there must be people out there that insist some of them sound good as quad decodes given some of the other bogus claims.

But of course they are, how dare you suggest they aren’t (lol)

I’m still hunting down the special playback unit with 4 horns fitted with the special 4 sided horn needle… one day 😉

I think Hagrid had a multi-channel HMV hound. Or was that just a terrible dream …

        • prefabfan May 15, 2013 at 22:14 #

I remember seeing that at HMV in London, on Oxford Street? 🙂

Yea, brings back memories of jumping into the car, parking in the underground car park under Hyde Park and hitting every record shop in the area for quad albums.

‘Our Price’ were normally well stocked with quad albums, along with HMV and many of the smaller dealers. Always got back home with a load of goodies. Those were the days.

Whowee, I have not ever seen this, at least not since that Lp was in the record store racks. I don’t think OD is old enough to remember record stores!!!

    • oxforddickie May 14, 2013 at 08:22 #

Well, thanks for that, but i remember 78’s!!!! In fact, i have some….
