I’m listening to this right now. I’ve always thought that BS&T’s albums after No Sweat were extremely patchy, although there were gems scattered about them. This one, while still not a great album, is better overall than its predecessor, Mirror Image. For one thing, the sense of an identity crisis doesn’t overwhelm this record like it did on Mirror Image, but the trade-off is that there is a near total dominance of covers (sort of like on their second and third albums) again, some of which don’t work very well for me (Applause, for example, is an interesting arrangement that just never comes together as a piece of music).

Since this is a quad blog, though, let me point out that in terms of sonics, this sounds a great deal better than the stereo mix as presented on Wounded Bird’s CD reissue, even when considering the vinyl factors involved. The CD sounded to me like it was sourced from a higher generation dub with considerable damage in places, and considering the density of the mix (which benefits from being opened up in the quad version).

I used to decode this on my Lafayette SQ-W decoder back in the day…never remember the separation being this good. Nice Job!!!1

Great fun, quite eclectic with lots of variety of styles from one track to the next. Much use of quad too. Definitely kept me entertained from start to finish. And I enjoyed the tuba parts having played the instrument in the past.
