Sorry I was so late to respond. So the “spirit” cd of the april 77 concert is sq. Well dam it I should have bought it when I had the chance! Further to the h concert info wise …drummond says hello in each speaker individualy and the concert was broadcast on 30th april 77. Moving over to chat to talk h/hj plus quad in general. Thanx

Hmm, so it was broadcast a day before the ‘official’ start of the experimental ‘H’ broadcasts, interesting.

The reason why the CD couldn’t be Matrix H is because the tapes were quite possibly taped over, as it was the the BBC’s way at the time. The only reason we still have these broadcasts is mainly due to the BBC’s subscription service that sold it’s programming to the world.

To satisfy the demand in the USA for quadraphonic material they remixed many of the concerts and made them available in SQ or QS (on special order)

Od a little correction is required. It was indeed broadcast in matrix h and was , I do believve it ws the first h pop/rock transmission in h. It was intro’d by pete drummond and he also gavelisteners a small h test at the start of the transmission (l have a cassette copy) the little test is most interesting. Whether or not the “spirit” copy is h …is another matter entirely .

Thanks for confirming it was an early ‘H’ broadcast in the UK. And CD3 of the set is encoded, but in SQ and not in Matrix H.

I've just listened to this and it's great, the quality of the playing is fantastic for a live performance. I particularly like the drums for some reason. Not massive in its use of quad, but it does convey the space of the theatre.

I certainly don't remember it being one of the first Matrix H broadcasts and as to the CD being H encoded, it isn't

    Thanks, OD.

I thought you might be interested that there is a reviewer on Amazon.co.uk (not the most reliable source, I know) who claims UK broadcast was in Matrix H, and that the CD release of this show in the Spirit – Live At The BBC box set is encoded.
