Todd Rundgren – Something / Anything!

24 Sep

Another un-released mix from the 1970’s, and one that should have been released. It is obvious from the disc format that it was being readied for a release in recent years, but for whatever reason, it never made it

Release: DS204

Format: 2 x DTS-CD

I like the mix on this one better than a lot of stuff I have heard from other artists, but I don’t think the songwriting is as strong as A True Star…

Argh, I wish this blog software would allow editing posts to fix typos.

I was unfamiliar with the term 2xDTS CD. I know them to be called SACDs.

    • oxforddickie October 5, 2013 at 08:57 #

SACD’s are completely different from DTS-CD’s.

    • Owen Smith October 5, 2013 at 12:00 #

A DTS CD is the lossy DTS codec (as used on DVD-Video with minor changes) written at CD bit rate direct onto an audio CD. If you put them into a CD player and play normally you just get noise, you have to feed the bitstream into a DTS decoder. You can play them with just a CD player and digital output to an AV amp.

Ignoring the CD layer of a hybrid disc, an SACD is lossless and written onto a DVD. Also it is completely different sampling scheme to everything else in use, it is 1 bit sampling at very high frequency. This causes significant problems, it’s difficult to mix and master 1 bit data because you can’t do digital signal processing on it so most SACDs are recorded conventially (typically 24/96) and then converted to the 1 bit high frequency format to put onto the disc. Many players then convert it back to 24/88.2 during playback, making the entire 1 bit thing rather pointless in my view.

Owen Smith said the magic words “..this is a CD, not a DVD. Don’t try to burn it to DVD.

That was the problem. I’m just learning this technology so I really appreciate all the help I can get.

    Thanks Owen, Cheers!

It does say on the posting: 2 x DTS-CD

    • Owen Smith October 4, 2013 at 18:33 #

Aha, one of my SWAGs (Scientific Wild Ass Guess) as to what the problems might be turned out to be correct. The “not a DVD” comment was an afterthought, and I nearly thought “nah, it can’t be that” and was going to delete it before posting, but then I thought what harm can it do and left it in. Good call!

I couldn’t get this to burn to disc correctly. I tried Jorge’s directions…made my 4th coaster. Can someone explain about BIN files?

    • Owen Smith October 4, 2013 at 09:31 #

It’s simple, a binary image of a CD can’t be a .iso file since they’re not ISO9660 filesystem images. The .bin is the binary data, the .cue is the track indexes. Use ImgBurn and drop the .cue file into it. When I did this it burnt first time with no problems at all.

Don’t try using other software, if you are on a PC use ImgBurn for this.

And this is a CD, not a DVD. Don’t try to burn it to DVD.

      • artsgard July 2, 2017 at 20:27 #

I Used ImgBurn I used a CD-R disc & dropped the .cue file in & it burned discs with tracks listed but audio is static..

        • oxforddickie July 2, 2017 at 23:50 #

They are DTS disc’s, as stated on the post.

    • Owen Smith October 4, 2013 at 09:34 #

Jorge’s instructins are if you want to play the images direct on a PC using Foobar or other software. If you want to burn CDs ignore those instructions, do not edit the files. Hopefully you kept a copy before editing, or you can undo the changes.

I’m really enjoying this one! Thanks OD. I had to learn how to work with BIN files but that wasn’t hard, even for me.

  7. 86ed February 6, 2013 at 18:28 #

Thanks so much OD, very excited to hear this one, especially Black Maria!!

  8. Jorge Luiz October 3, 2012 at 02:49 #

The files are working to play in foobar and to extract after few changes:

1- rename the first file(xxCD1) to:

    Todd Rundgren – Something_Anything CD1.bin

2- with notepad, open the xxxCD1.cue and change the first line to:

    FILE “Todd Rundgren – Something_Anything CD1.dts” WAVE

3- save the xxCD1.cue after changes!

4- do the same with the second file(xxCD2) and xxCD2.cue respecting and using the number '2' for this case, of course.

    cheers and thanks again. 🙂

  9. Jorge Luiz October 3, 2012 at 00:38 #

Fantastic, really a dream. Thanks again for another great release. 🙂

  10. Lokkerman October 2, 2012 at 20:18 #

Totally sympathise as well OD. I used to get this stress from the SSGG but I think forums like yours have made the SSGG low on the radar now. All credit to you and as always hang in.
    Very Best Wishes.

I'm fine, i justget tired of those who make running a blog a pain. I'm not the only blogger to suffer, those who know of 'dessertreat' who he's recently got to he point where he nearly closed his blog.

All i'll say (again) is that a lot of time and money goes into doing this. If anyone thinks they can do better, then do it! If not, shut up!

  12. duilawyr October 1, 2012 at 23:53 #

I think Oxford Dickie is stressed out by some private emails. Can we agree, for a little while WHETHER YOU ARE RIGHT OR WRONG, and whether Oxford Dickie is RIGHT OR WRONG in your opinion, let's leave him alone? I don't know what people sent him (I hope it wasn't mine about Romney wanting airplanes to have roll down windows) but Dickie is upset, and all of us are entitled to a little peace if we need it. Dickie, write me privately if you need to get something off your chest, even unrelated to music, and I will hold off even on thank you's for a while. Make a picnic basket, take your better half.. LAST THANK YOU FOR A WHILE–

  13. OxfordDickie September 28, 2012 at 23:28 #

Well, we have Lokkerman to thank for allowing me to release it

  14. Q-Eight September 28, 2012 at 23:16 #

I don't really see why people are getting so uptight about this. There are LESS discrete legitimate Quad releases out there! The Archies? Not to mention many Quad albums out there with faked songs. IF this is a vintage mix, and was slated for CD-4, I can understand the non-agressive mix. More aggressive in CD-4 means more distortion. AND, if it were a vintage mix, chances are ALL the masters were available. Now, if this were a modern mix, there may have been some missing masters. In which case, they probably mixed the entire album to match the songs the had to fake. IF this were an upmix, it's either the best damned one I've ever heard OR it's not really an upmix. I think OD's been around long enough that he can tell the difference.

Either way, I'm glad he let it out. Maybe in the future, to squelch the nay-sayers, release the really discrete un-released albums?

  15. OxfordDickie September 28, 2012 at 16:08 #

True, but none of you see the emails………..

  16. duilawyr September 28, 2012 at 15:59 #

Expressing a doubt is neither a “winge” or complaining. You are equating your reputation with a silver metal disc. Something\Anything ain't you or your efforts; conversely, you ain't Something\Anything. Even if every person here felt it was an upmix, it would not be an affront to you. You are you; it's only a CD. If your tolerance level is “N questioning comment about anything I post is allowed!!!”; OK; it's your forum. Let people know that. And you should and DO know that I do more than just sample the free merchandise.

  17. evacuationroute September 28, 2012 at 14:28 #

i feel kinda bad, being the first to suggest this may have been an upmix. i've had a few more days of listening, and honestly have been quite enjoying this mix. i've been listening to what's coming out of the rears in particular, and there's definitely some nice stuff going on, especially in the off-the-floor stuff on the fourth side.
i guess my original point was that i really would have expected more playfulness out of a surround mix on this particular album, but i was also unaware of any issues with studio masters, etc.
    please keep 'em coming…

    @Mike – seconded.

@OD: It would really be a crying shame if a couple of doubters would manage to bring down what you've been doing all of this time, especially when it comes to unreleased stuff that is making the rest of us see butterflies. Please don't let these pesky things trouble you, they're part for the course

Like the song says: “There's One In Every Crowd”… LOL

  20. Unknown September 28, 2012 at 11:31 #

    OD & Lokkerman,

Please don't let the naysaying of one or two individuals stop you from doing what you apparently enjoy – sharing music. It's good enough for most of us that you, repeat you, think this worthy. Frankly, I believe most complainers are just jealous that they can't do what you do and are just trying to destroy something they can't control.

The point is, you have a large and loyal following and we greatly appreciate anything you chose to share.

duilawyr – dude, please shut the F up before you ruin a good thing. If you don't like it, keep your opinion to your self. Didn't your mother teach you that if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.

  21. OxfordDickie September 28, 2012 at 11:26 #

1, I'm not stopping the normal releases, there are four already to roll

2, Perhaps we can cool things off now, and just enjoy the music

  22. duilawyr September 28, 2012 at 11:17 #

My posts are not based on anyone's reputation, and not on Todd Rundgren's expertise. It is based solely on listening, and noting there are NO SOUNDS in the rear speakers that are not present in the front speakers. Could it by my dts decoder? Sure!! Could it be my lack of knowledge as to how upmixes sound? Maybe? Who cares? We are talking about toys, and no disrespect is meant to anyone. I hope we can discuss this type of “trivia” (yes, I said it) that is of great interest to us, but nothing to the world at large, without anyone's feathers getting ruffled. Let's keep it about sound and mixing, and not try to prove we are right by reference to our knowledge of Todd, or guitar playing skill. It's what comes out of the speakers that matter. And my opinion is just one of hundreds.

  23. duilawyr September 28, 2012 at 11:09 #

Easy solution, and obvious answer. Push your listening chair to the side and move it halfway between front and rear speakers. Face the sound field, in other words sit at 3:00 and face the center of the clock. ALL SOUND which emanates from the rear speakers begins in the fronts and as volume increases stretches toward the rears. Except for the first notes of Black Mariah, which begin in the rears, which DSP can easily do. So you got an upmix. There have been some very good ones, Led Zeppelin II, and Animals, the Cars, XLNT upmixes. But like OD, I prefer the real deal. And of course, if the multitracks are missing, then there couldn't possibly have been a real quad mix (see, for example, “Black Cow” by Steely Dan). I wouldn't be surprised if by next week Oxford Dickie has the real quad. And if he never posts another work? He's done more than enough already.–sleepless in Malibu
