Hesperion XX – El Barroco Espanol

26 Apr

This album contains a selection of Spanish secular music from the baroque period. The ensemble is small and intimate with Montserrat Figueras, soprano, together with a fine quartet of musicians: Ton Koopman on harpsichord, Hopkinson Smith on guitar and theorbo, Christophe Coin, on viol, and, of course, Jordi Savall on viol as well.. The pieces are almost all scored differently, ranging from solo harpsichord pieces (the Toccata and Gallarda by Cabanilles), to pieces for viol and guitar (Martín y Coll’s Diferencias sobre las Folias, a set of variations on the famous La Folia theme), to songs with soprano and instruments

Alceu Valenca & Geraldo Azevedo – Self Titled

21 Apr

There’s quite a bit of confusion on the internet regarding this album, so here’s the facts. This was the duo’s first album, which was self-titled, and was released on the Copacabana label. The rather over-large ‘quadrafonico’ on the front meant it was a Quad recording (many think it’s the title) and was SQ encoded.

If this Brazilian duo is unknoiwn to you, here a little more info

I don’t normally state my musical views, but i think i’d say that this is something of an aquired taste, and can grow on  you

Mozart – Bastien Und Bastienne

7 Apr

Bastien und Bastienne was one of Mozart’s earliest single act operas, written in 1768 when he was only twelve years old. It was allegedly commissioned by Viennese physician and ‘magnetist’ Dr. Anton Mesmer (who himself would later be parodied in Così fan tutti) as a satire of the ‘pastoral’ genre then prevalent, and specifically as a parody of the opera Le devin du village by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. After its supposed premiere in Mesmer’s garden theatre (that is only corroborated by an unverified account of Nissen), it was not revived again until 1890, when it was performed on the 2nd October at the Architektenhaus in Berlin.
By a curious coincidence, the opening melody of the overture is almost identical to that of Beethoven’s Third Symphony, the Eroica. However, as the piece lay unperformed until long after that symphony was written, this appears to be chance rather than plagiarism.

SYNOPSIS:

Bastienne pines for her sweetheart Bastien who has has left for the city. While she has been tending her sheep, Bastien has been seduced by the shine and glamour of both the city and a wealthy lady. Upon the recommendation of Colas, when Bastien returns Bastienne plays hard-to-get so cruelly that the distraught and ill-loving Bastien is brought to the brink of suicide. Finally realising their transcendent love, the two sheepherders discard pretence and reaffirm their mutual love for each other.
